Caring for the Greenway

The Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway Conservancy is committed to operating and maintaining the new Greenway parks in an environmentally responsible manner.  The Conservancy staff uses “best” practices related to the most sustainable and organic methods known.

Horticulture
HorticultureUsing organic landscape maintenance practices, the Conservancy horticulture staff works to ensure that the plants on the Greenway grow healthy and beautiful.  Our goal is to provide year round botanical interest in all parks, beautiful settings, and an enjoyable environment.  We use efficient practices, eliminate the use of toxic chemicals, and build management tools such as composting that will recycle important nutrients into the soil.

ChinatownMaintenance
It is the Conservancy’s goal to ensure that the parks are clean, safe, and respectable for every neighbor and visitor using the parks. This means consistent, efficient and responsive work practices, from emptying trash cans on a regular basis to fixing problems promptly.  Routine maintenance of all structures and equipment includes environmentally safe products.

The Team
The Conservancy’s staff consists of trained professionals in the fields of horticulture and park maintenance.  Each person provides an important skill to complete the routine and long-term care for all aspects of the parks.

We also work with several dedicated professional contractors who perform necessary tasks to keep the plants and park surfaces in good condition.

WORK Inc. is a major partner in caring for the Greenway. This non-profit organization is nationally recognized as a pioneer in developing community based programs for individuals with disabilities. Founded in 1965, their experience in landscaping and grounds maintenance is significant. Their staff provides essential assistance to the Conservancy staff to complete the landscaping and surface maintenance, trash and snow removal services required to keep the grounds in pristine condition. Like the Conservancy, they incorporate best practices in their use of environmentally friendly materials and equipment and benchmark their work against the best landscaping methods in the field today.
