Rowes Wharf Plaza (between High St. & Broad St.)
Come out after work for the opening of Ice Chimes, a temporary art installation on the Greenway. Join us for this celebration of public art on the plaza followed by networking and a nightcap at Vintage Lounge (72 Broad St).
Ice Chimes will be on display in the Wharf District Parks from December 8, 2011 – April 2012. The sculpture is 20 feet high and collects precipitation and encourages icicle growth along a series of metal chimes. The piece is being built and installed by local fine builders Payne Bouchier with the assistance of structural engineers Siegel Associates.
Ice Chimes seeks to capture and amplify the beauty and sounds produced by icicles over the course of their dynamic life cycle turning the harsh elements of winter into a positive response. Wind will activate the chimes and cold will encourage icicle growth. Moskow Linn Architects categorize the work as one of their “urban interventions” by which they intend to improve the lives of city-dwellers through small-scale public design projects. Using the city as an open-source platform for ideas, "urban interventions" address problems specific to urban life and help us imagine the future of our urban infrastructure.
