Bright Lights for Winter Nights 2010
Tomorrow, the Greenway unveils Bright Lights for Winter Nights, a 12-week lighting and art display that will run from December 21st to the spring equinox, March 21st, 2011. Join us Tuesday, December 21st from 4-7 PM for a free celebratory event.
“Our goal is to draw as many people as we can to the Greenway in all seasons of the year – and to get them outside and moving – even on dark winter days,” says Nancy Brennan, our executive director. “We’re building on the success of last year’s ‘Bright Lights for Winter Nights’ pilot installation, so bundle up, and see what these different neighborhoods have in store!”
There will be fun for all ages in all the parks. Gather friends and family and come celebrate the winter solstice on the Greenway!
Free Events
The North End (New Sudbury Street to North Street) – family & community:
- Changing color, solar-powered star and ball LED lights hung from the pergolas
- Flipping of the switch to light the Elm tree, the largest tree on the Greenway, which will be wrapped with white LED string lights
- Children’s dance performances by the North End Performing Arts Center (bell and sing-a-longs)
- Teen dance troop “Thee Slap Bracelets,” from the Trotter Institute
- “Stir a holiday food memory” by creating their own postcards capturing a holiday food memory – happy, funny, sad, memorable
The Wharf District (Commercial Street to High Street) – color & surprise:
- Changing light blade colors
- Newly installed sculpture by Jacob Kulin, “Modern Dance” in the Urban Arboretum
- DJ Mac Maching at Rings Fountain
- Four winter-themed ice sculptures with LED lighting
- Games on artificial ice
- Free hot chocolate from Sel de la Terre
- Silk Road BBQ food vendor will have food available for purchase
Four Point Channel Parks (Oliver Street to Congress Street) – quiet innovation:
- Quiet “red stick garden” created by the Conservancy to add color to the garden beds all season
- Create a pattern of joy with “constellation / joy”, an interactive lighting installation made up of 1,000 freestanding LED lights by Fort Point studio goodgood
Dewey Square Plaza (Congress Street to Summer Street) – movement:
- Boston Music Awards’ Best New Artist of the Year, Kingsley Flood and Emperor Norton’s Stationary Marching Band along with Sea Monsters presented by Hub Media will be performing in Dewey Square Plaza
- Make snowmen (if there is snow!)
- Purchase food from the Clover food truck.
Chinatown (Essex Street to Essex Street) – light & sound:
- Colorful LED lights on plaza poles
- Banners with children’s drawings from the 4th-6th graders at the Josiah Quincy School
- Colorful seasonal plants in planters
- Write-a-message (What Brings You Joy?) participatory wall projection
- Interactive drumming by Genki Spark “inspiring strong Asian girls”
- Luminaria-making
- Victorian Carolers
Throughout all of the Greenway’s parks, enjoy a visit from the Snow Queen and free trolley rides thanks to Greenway neighbor Liberty Bay Credit Union.
