What’s in Bloom?
North End Parks
Common Bluestar (Amsonia tabernaemontana), Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea ‘Apricot Beauty’), and May Night Woodland Sage (Salvia x sylvestris ‘Mainacht’) all continue to bloom. Cinderella Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata ‘Cinderella’) and Gateway Hollow-stemmed Joe-pye Weed (Eupatorium maculatum ‘Gateway’) are just beginning to show signs of flowering, as well as two varieties of Coneflower (Echinacea): the purple-flowering ‘Art’s Pride’, and the orange-flowering ‘Sunset’.
Wharf District Parks
Olympica Harebell (Campanula rotundifolia ‘Olympica’ ), Bluestar (Amsonia sp.), Husker Red Foxglove Beardtongue (Penstemon digitalis ‘Husker Red’ ) and Sweetbay Magnolia (Magnolia virginiana) all continue to bloom, as well as several varieties of Mountain Laurel (Kalmia) and Shrubby Cinquefoil (Potentilla).
Canada Anemone (Anemone canadensis) is past its peak bloom, with many of the flowers fading away and revealing the ornamental seed heads. The dark purple fruit of the Allegheny Serviceberry (Amelanchier laevis) is now fully ripe throughout the park.
Fort Point Channel Parks
Endless Summer Hydrangea (Hydrangea ‘Endless Summer’), Annabelle Wild Hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens ‘Annabelle’), Japanese Dogwood (Cornus kousa), Strawberry Seduction Yarrow (Achillea millefolium ‘Strawberry Seduction’), Apricot Delight Yarrow (Achillea millefolium ‘Apricot Delight’), Black Lace Elderberry (Sambucus nigra ‘Eva’), Bewitched Pinks (Dianthus ‘Bewitched’), Goat’s Beard (Aruncus dioicus), Catmint (Nepeta), Pink Columbine Meadow Rue (Thalictrum aquilegifolium ‘Roseum’), Rozanne Geranium (Geranium ‘Rozanne’), Lady’s Mantle (Alchemilla mollis) May Night Woodland Sage (Salvia x sylvestris ‘Mainacht’), Henry’s Garnet Virginia Sweetspire (Itea virginica ‘Henry’s Garnet’ ), Rainbow Knockout Rose (Rosa ‘Radcor’), Fairy Rose (Rosa ‘The Fairy’), Virginia Rose (Rosa virginiana), Pink Fountain Lindheimer’s Beeblossom (Gaura lindheimeri ‘Walgaupf’) Husker Red Foxglove Beardtongue, and Coralbells (Heuchera), Hubricht’s Bluestar (Amsonia hubrichtii), and Camelot Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea ‘Camelot Cream’) all continue to bloom.
The new addition this week is Zagreb Tickseed (Coreopsis ‘Zagreb’), bearing a long lasting golden-yellow flower.
Dewey Square Park
Vast sweeps of Moonshine Yarrow (Achillea ‘Moonshine’), Fairy Rose, May Night Woodland Sage, and Rozanne Geranium are decorating the park with their yellow, pink, dark purple, and pale purple displays. Heuchera (Coralbells) are also beginning to bloom with Scarlet Bee Balm (Monarda didyma) and Crème Brule Tickseed (Coreopsis ‘Crème Brule’) soon to follow.
Chinatown Parks
A few varieties of late-blooming azaleas still persist, though they are clearly past their peak. The bamboo continues its season of growth, with the Wakehurst Blue Fountain Bamboo (Fargesia nitida ‘Wakehurst’) emerging rapidly from the ground in the northern end of the park.
