Early Summer Color

30, May, 2014 Darrah Cole

Make way for the peonies and iris. The first of what I consider summer flowers are starting to bloom on the Greenway. The luscious tree peony flowers, full, loose and frilly have already passed by in a flash but the Peaonia lactiflora, and other hybrid peonies, are fully budded and just about to pop open. Watch for them in the North End Parks, Fort Point Channel, along Surface Road, and in Chinatown. They will put on quite a show.

The other early flowers are the iris – Iris germanica ‘Breakers’ and Iris germanica ‘Depth of Field’, icy blue and apricot respectively, are putting on a good show in the North End, and can be found in Fort Point Channel Park as well.

Chinatown Park has a smaller group of siberian iris; these have elegant and simple flowers most often in shades of blue and violet. These will pass by quickly in the warming weather.
