“Welcome” New Green & Grow Class!

The transition into fall and the start of a new school year signals it is time to say farewell to our Green & Grow summer interns and welcome a fresh class of new faces for the 2011-2012 program year.

This year, we are saving some of our goodbyes. For the first time, we are proud and delighted to welcome two outstanding apprentices from last year’s program to the Conservancy staff!  Raynel and Remy both worked as interns in the park this summer. Their hard work, dedication and skills acquired through the Green & Grow program will serve them well in their new roles with the Horticulture and Maintenance crew. Congratulations!

We are very excited to announce the arrival of ten new Green & Grow Apprentices for the 2011-2012 program year. The Green & Grow team spent their first Saturday together participating in progressively more difficult teambuilding challenges at Project Adventure  in Beverly, MA.   The day focused on support, teamwork, effective communication, and trust.

At the end of the day, apprentice, Yari, said, “It felt great to get over that wall. I didn’t think I could do it, but with the team behind me—supporting me and cheering me on, I knew I could do it.”

The team will take back the principles of support, trust, teamwork and effective communication back to the Greenway with them where they will assist Horticulture, Maintenance and Events staff in providing positive park experiences for all of the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway’s visitors.

Green & Grow is a workforce development program that was established by the Conservancy in 2009.  The program helps young Bostonians become effective and reliable employees through working and learning in an urban park as they work alongside the talented Conservancy staff of urban planners, event planners, maintenance specialists and horticulturalists.
