Communications Manager

The Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy, the non-profit responsible for the management and care of The Greenway, is seeking a strategic thinker and passionate communications professional to join our team as the Communications Manager. This role will work closely with the Director of Programs and Outreach and the Conservancy’s leadership team, including the Executive Director, to plan and direct the organization’s communications strategy, support our mission through dynamic storytelling, and grow our engagement to diverse audiences.

The Greenway is beloved for its gorgeous gardens, contemporary public art, family and cultural programming, food trucks, beer gardens, and more, but the fascinating stories behind the work too often go untold. The Communications Manager will develop a comprehensive and integrated approach to effectively communicate the value of our work to diverse audiences, stakeholders, donors, and potential supporters. This role will manage the Visual Design and Marketing Coordinator and any department interns, projects and campaigns, vendors, and the production of marketing materials. The Outreach team also includes our Park Rangers and will collaborate with them to understand in park experiences.

Responsibilities:

Strategic Communications:

  • Develop a deep understanding of the work of the Conservancy. Create an overarching, year-round communications plan built around strategic themes, compelling narratives, and our mission. Effectively disseminate the plan through integrated marketing channels to drive engagement and brand awareness. 
  • Collaborate with the Development team on communications strategies that elevate fundraising initiatives and help make the case for philanthropic support.
  • Position and promote Conservancy leadership as thought leaders in areas of their specific expertise.

Management and Execution: 

  • Work closely with the Director of Programs and Outreach to initiate and set goals for the department according to the objectives of the organization.
  • Oversee marketing projects and materials from planning to implementation, including electronic newsletters, social media platforms, physical collateral, advertising, and any other campaigns. Stay up-to-date on marketing trends to strategically improve the organization’s brand identity to nurture and grow our audiences. 
  • Manage owned media including the Conservancy website and in-park signage with the Visual Design and Marketing Coordinator. 
  • Act as a liaison between departments and external partners, such as the Greenway Business Improvement District (BID). Build trusted relationships and regularly meet with teams to learn, brainstorm, and gather information that informs strategic communications. Support them in developing content and campaigns.
  • Ensure messaging is consistent with overall communication strategy, tone, and brand of the Conservancy across all platforms. Monitor and improve internal systems and processes.
  • Supervise and mentor the Visual Design and Marketing Coordinator and any interns. 
  • Hire and manage vendors such as consultants, photographers, videographers, printers, etc. Manage contracts and support advertising buys with local publications and other media outlets.
  • Evaluate and monitor platform performance on an ongoing basis by analyzing key metrics.
  • Other duties as assigned related to the Conservancy’s mission or to support partners or stakeholders.

Community and Outreach:

  • Develop and oversee a communications strategy for community and government stakeholders. Provide talking points and key messages for the Executive Director and other staff.
  • Draft and distribute press releases and community emails. Pitch, pursue, and secure local, regional, and national electronic and print media coverage. Cultivate and maintain relationships with media contacts, journalists, and influencers.
  • Represent the Conservancy. Oversee the response to public inquiries, attend community meetings, and lead tours. Spend time on The Greenway and occasionally attend Conservancy public events as needed.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Passion for the work of the Greenway Conservancy and the communities it serves.
  • At least 5 years of successful work experience in a related field.
  • Knowledge of and experience with multiple online channels (Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, etc.), MailChimp, WordPress, and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Experience working in a diverse and inclusive organization is a plus.
  • Bilingual skills are a plus, especially in Chinese languages given our proximity to the Chinatown neighborhood.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to drive Conservancy vehicles in downtown Boston to evaluate, install, and move signage and represent the Conservancy at events. 

Candidates at the higher end of the salary range will also bring:

  • A strong background in communications strategies and a proven track record of successfully developing and executing integrated marketing and communications plans from the ground up. 
  • Media and public relations skills with strong attention to detail, copy editing, and an understanding of multimedia and visual storytelling.
  • Experience managing projects and interdisciplinary teams. Comfort and skill at managing up and across an organization.

Logistics

  • This is a full time (40 hours a week) position with full benefits. 
  • Work hours are generally Monday through Friday but flexibility is required, particularly for social media monitoring and some occasional evening or weekend shifts. 
  • Work will generally take place indoors, but the position will require some time outdoors on The Greenway. 
  • This is a hybrid position. Outreach staff work in the office a minimum of three days a week in order to collaborate with other departments and stay current on park and organizational matters.

Compensation

  • $65,000 – $75,000/year
