The Grass is Greener
During the past week, several sections of turf that had experienced compaction due to rain and then heavy foot traffic have been replaced. We spoke with Stu Shillaber, Superintendent of Horticulture for the Greenway Conservancy, about the process.

In late June we observed a very exciting and unique horticultural event: the first flowering of our Eastern Prickly Pear! The Eastern Prickly Pear is a member of the cactus family, and is native to Massachusetts. These plants are listed as endangered, and we have enjoyed introducing them into the park and observing how well they have survived in our urban public space.

Our organically maintained landscape provides shelter and food for many organisms. We have observed a plethora of pollinators enjoying our plant material already this year, and we have also encountered our fair share of pests and disease, but we have been pleased to see evidence of our cultivated environment working to protect itself. Our commitment to organic land care has given us a great appreciation for beneficial insects.

Of our most perennially popular plants, the genus Allium stands out as a public favorite in the Fort Point Channel Parks. We currently have nine unique varieties of these marvelous bulbs, all varying in size, shape, or color. Here is a guide to our many Allium, see how many you can spot in the parks!
Growing Greener with Green & Grow
One of the goals of the Green & Grow Apprenticeship program is to foster the development of a healthy and meaningful connection to our natural world. In essence, we bring this connection to work with us every day. The Apprentices are taking part in a number of activities to prepare them for their primary nature excursion—set to take place in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

We have enjoyed an unseasonably warm fall as we continue our work out in the parks, but the winter chill has begun to descend upon us. As the very last autumn leaves fall the evergreen trees and shrubs are becoming the focal point.

As the last full month of fall draws to a close, our deciduous trees are almost completely bare and we are working to prepare the garden beds for winter by cutting back perennials and cleaning up the fallen leaves. Take advantage of these beautiful days by getting outside to admire the changing landscape.

The Greenway is still ablaze with vibrant fall colors, so don’t delay in coming to take an autumn stroll through the parks.

As winter approaches many people dreading the dreary upcoming months may dismiss the idea of a beautiful winter landscape. We still have a few weeks left of fall color, but as our trees and shrubs lose their leaves and the perennials are cut down or covered with a blanket of snow, beautiful aspects of plants that may have previously been hidden will be revealed.
