Discover Family Fun on the Rose Kennedy Greenway: From Chinatown to the North End
Looking to discover a summer of family fun in downtown Boston? The Rose Kennedy Greenway is your go-to urban oasis, stretching from the vibrant heart of Chinatown to the historic charm of the North End. With interactive play areas, lush green spaces, educational gardens, and plenty of spots to splash and relax, The Greenway offers something for everyone in the family—all within walking distance of some of Boston’s most beloved attractions.
Start in Chinatown: Play & Explore
Kick off your journey at the PlayCubes play area near the iconic Chinatown Gate. These modern, geometric structures invite children to climb, balance, and explore while grown-ups enjoy the artful landscaping and cultural energy of this unique neighborhood.
Learn and Grow in Dewey Square
Next, head to Dewey Square and discover our Demonstration Garden, where kids and adults alike can learn about sustainable gardening in small urban spaces. See how herbs, vegetables, and pollinator plants thrive in raised beds and containers—offering inspiration and real-world examples for growing your own food, no matter how limited your space might be.
Swing Into Art with “Big Hoops to Fill”
Further up the Greenway, take a break at our newest public art installation: Big Hoops to Fill, by Ja’Hari Ortega, a playful, oversized swing set that invites both rest and reflection. Beyond the joy of swinging, this installation sparks important conversations around representation, equity, and community through thoughtful design and cultural symbolism.
️ Weekend Markets in the Wharf District
Make your way to the Wharf District, where local creativity comes alive each Saturday and Sunday at our Greenway Artisan Market. Browse handmade crafts, jewelry, prints, and more—all crafted by local makers. It’s a great place to pick up a unique gift or treat yourself while supporting Boston’s creative community.
Beat the Heat at the Fountains
On warmer days, nothing beats the joy of our interactive fountain features. Here, kids of all ages can dance through the Rings Fountain, splash in the North End fountains, or cool off near Harbor Fog, a unique sculptural misting installation. The Greenway’s water features provide the perfect way to refresh and play on a summer day.
A one-of-a-kind Carousel awaits
Looking to inject some whimsy into your day? The Greenway Carousel at Tiffany & Co. Foundation Grove offers a unique “spin” on fun for all ages! The hand-carved animals of our Carousel feature furry, feathered, and finned friends from Boston Harbor. Each animal was lovingly inspired by illustrations created by local Boston schoolchildren. The Carousel itself is also one of the most ADA-accessible in New England, offering a variety of accommodations for visitors of all needs. Whether you’re young or young-of-heart, a visit to the Carousel is the perfect way to mark an afternoon on The Greenway.
Picnic, Rest, and Recharge
Need a break? The Greenway is lined with shady trees, soft lawns, and picnic-friendly spaces—perfect for a midday rest, lunch from a Greenway food truck, or just watching the world go by. Bring a blanket and enjoy a low-key afternoon under the canopy of trees.
♀️ A Walkable Path to Boston’s Best
The Greenway doesn’t just offer activities—it connects you to some of Boston’s most exciting destinations. Walk from the Greenway to the New England Aquarium, Boston Children’s Museum, Faneuil Hall, Boston Public Market, and more. Whether you’re local or visiting, it’s the perfect place to experience the best of Boston.
