Growing a Stronger Dewey Square: Upcoming Tree Canopy Improvements

This spring, we’re excited to share that improvements are coming to Dewey Square on The Greenway.

As part of our ongoing commitment to caring for this vibrant public space, we’ll be focusing on strengthening the plaza’s tree canopy. This work includes renovating the existing tree pits—specialized planting areas designed to support healthy root systems—and upgrading the irrigation system beneath them to better sustain plant health through establishment and drought.

After careful evaluation, we’ve determined that the current trees are not thriving in this environment. They will be removed and replaced with new tree specimens that we expect will be better suited to the conditions in Dewey Square and more successful over time.

We’re also taking this opportunity to diversify the plantings in the plaza by introducing two new tree species, Red Splendor Arnold Buckeye (Aeculus x arnoldiana ‘Red Splendor’) and Amur Maackia (Maackia amurensis). Increasing tree diversity helps create a more resilient landscape, improves ecological health, and enhances seasonal interest for visitors throughout the year.

We anticipate that all work will be completed by early May. While the new trees will be smaller at the time of planting, they represent a long-term investment in the health and beauty of Dewey Square. As they grow, they will help create a more welcoming, comfortable, and restorative space for the community to gather and enjoy for years to come.

We appreciate your patience during this work and look forward to sharing the renewed space with you soon.
