Celebrating Public Art in Boston with The Greenway

Photography by: Mel Taing

This spring, we’re delighted to have so many wonderful public art events filling our city here in Boston, and excited to have some new and exciting Greenway Public Art updates to share with our visitors, too!

Below are some of the events we have on our calendar in the weeks ahead. We’re looking forward to celebrating new Greenway artists and their work, and visiting with community partners who are doing so much to contribute to a beautiful and vibrant public art scene here in Boston!

Be sure to send us a message if there are other exciting public art events we should have on our radar at [email protected]

You’re Invited to the Cookout, May 15

An opening reception for Ja’Hari Ortega’s Big Hoops to Fill

We invite you to celebrate Ja’Hari Ortega’s Big Hoops to Fill with us on Thursday, May 15, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the opening reception, You’re Invited to The Cookout. This family-friendly celebration will feature remarks from the artist, music from DJ Séga Genn and A Trike Called Funk, lawn games for all ages, and Latin soul cuisine from Butter “UR” Biscuit.

Triennial Opening Week, May 22-26

The Boston Triennial is a public art organization dedicated to supporting artists and communities in bold, contemporary, public art here in Boston, MA, and we’re so excited to see the new works they feature this year!

The Greenway Conservancy is delighted to see previous Greenway Artist, Andy Li, recognized as one of the contributing artists for this exhibition. His installation The Herd, 2021, was envisioned during a particularly difficult time following the beginning of the pandemic, to create a serene and unifying environment in Chin Park to remind us that, like a herd of oxen, we are in this together. We can’t wait to see his contribution to The Triennial!

We’re also thrilled to see former Greenway Public Art Intern, Jasper Sanchez, making a difference in Boston’s public art scene as the Assistant Curator for the Triennial! Congratulations, Jasper!

Twilight at MAAM, May 22

This community celebration has not one, but two exhibitions to look forward to! The first is co-curated with the Triennial and features work by Nicholas Galanin, who will also have a public art piece near the museum as part of the Triennial in Evans Way Park.

The other exhibition (Generations) features Boston-based artists awarded by the Wagner Foundation. One of these artists, Wen Ti Tsen, was a featured artist on The Greenway in Chinatown in 2016.

Eco-Art Cart Book Club, May 27, June 24, and July 27

Join the Greenway Public Art team throughout the summer for a series of pop-up art-making parties and a monthly Climate Fiction Book Club hosted by our Eco-Art Cart in Dewey Square!

For the first read, we will discuss Octavia E. Butler’s iconic 1993 speculative fiction novel, “The Parable of the Sower.” This work was a primary source of inspiration for artist Misa Chhan, whose exhibition will be installed in Auntie Kay & Uncle Frank Chin Park on The Greenway later this month.

Where will you celebrate public art?

We hope you’ll join us in at one (or all!) of these wonderful events this season, as we celebrate and explore the public art scene here in Boston! If there are other special public art events that are free and open to the public, please share them with us! We love having the opportunity to connect different communities and learn more about the amazing artists that are making our world a more beautiful and thoughtful place, one work at a time.
