Meet the Team Behind Boston’s Greenway: How We Keep the Park Beautiful Year-Round

If you’ve ever wandered down The Greenway and found yourself admiring the mechanics of the Carousel, a beautifully maintained pathway, or a fountain that always seems to be sparkling at just the right moment, you’ve already seen the work of The Greenway Maintenance Team.

Our Maintenance Team quietly keeps the park running smoothly in every season, working behind the scenes each day to make The Greenway vibrant and welcoming. They are the early-morning problem-solvers, the behind-the-scenes caretakers, and the hands that ensure The Greenway remains clean, safe, and welcoming for more than a million visitors each year.

Who Is the Maintenance Team?

Our Maintenance Team is a small but mighty group of skilled professionals who bring expertise in carpentry, electrical work, logistics, and general park upkeep. They work across all 17 acres of the park, supporting everything from infrastructure repairs and event logistics to improvements that help make The Greenway more accessible and enjoyable for all of our visitors.

What They Do All Year Long

Season after season, our maintenance crew adapts to whatever the park needs. Their work includes:

Spring & Summer

  • Starting up and performing maintenance on fountains
  • Repairing park furnishings when needed (trash barrels, benches, tables, and chairs)
  • Preparing plazas and event spaces for the busy season
  • Maintaining the mechanics of the Carousel
  • Maintaining all light fixtures throughout the park

Fall

  • Winterizing fountains and water features
  • Working on seasonal repairs
  • Prepping structures and systems for colder weather

Winter

  • Repairing umbrellas and other park furnishings that are removed for the winter
  • Assisting with snow and ice removal
  • Installing seasonal lighting throughout the park

Throughout the year, the Maintenance Team is overseeing our supplemental services contractor to ensure the park looks at its best in all seasons. Additionally, the team performs consistent preventative maintenance to achieve 2% of less downtime on all of The Greenway’s water features and Carousel each year!

No matter the time of year, they’re constantly monitoring the park’s infrastructure, fixing issues before most visitors notice them, and supporting every department, from horticulture to programs and public art.

Why Their Work Matters

The Greenway isn’t just a park—it’s a highly activated, downtown public space that blends gardens, art, and activity. That means our maintenance team plays a uniquely vital role: they keep everything functioning in an environment that thousands of people walk through each day.

Their work protects the park’s longevity, ensures safety, and enhances the experience for everyone who visits. They are one of the reasons The Greenway looks and feels like a loved, intentional, and vibrant public space.

“The maintenance team takes pride in the work we do, and that allows visitors to enjoy safe spaces where all of the water features, fountains, and Carousel run with little to no downtime.” – Mike Dockray, Maintenance Team Supervisor

What sets our Maintenance Team apart isn’t just their skills, it’s their commitment. They know the quirks of the fountains, the hidden features of the plazas, and the little details that make The Greenway special. They take pride in making the park shine, no matter the weather, all year long!
