Celebrate the Lunar New Year on The Greenway

24, Jan, 2025

Here at The Greenway we’re so excited to celebrate Lunar New Year with our downtown neighbors! If you’re wondering how you can join the celebrations, we’re sharing a handful of the local neighborhood events we have on our calendar.

Lunar New Year Events Near The Greenway

The Lunar New Year falls on January 29, 2025, but there will be a variety of events leading up to New Year’s Day, as well as community celebrations following. If you visit The Greenway over the next few weeks there are several exciting community events on the calendar to mark the Year of the Snake!

Take a day to visit the Lunar New Year Pop-up Market

If you’re looking for a special gift to celebrate the New Year, be sure to visit Chinatown Mainstreet’s Pop-up Market! The market will run from  January 24 to January 28, 2025 (Lunar New Year’s Eve) and will feature flowers, gifts, and decorations. Located at Chinatown Trade Center, the market can easily be accessed from the MBTA Orange Line Chinatown stop, or the Green Line Boylston Street stop. To learn more you can visit Chinatown Mainstreet’s webpage.

Celebrate the New Year with The Lion Dance Parade

February 9, 2025 will mark the day of the annual Chinatown Lion Dance Parade. The parade will begin at 11 a.m. in Phillips Square and will make its way through the streets of Chinatown. Barring inclement weather (strong winds, heavy snow, or rain), the parade will feature multiple processions, lion dances, and live music. This is also a wonderful time to take in the beautiful red lanterns hung throughout Chinatown. The color red symbolizes luck in the New Year.

Explore Chinatown’s Chinese New Year Cultural Villages

Another fun event to explore on February 9, 2025 is Chinatown Main Street’s Chinese New Year Cultural Village.  The Cultural Village runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and features singing, arts and crafts, live performances, and more! This event is free and open to the public.

The Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association of New England (CBBA) will also be hosting a Cultural Village at their building at 90 Tyler Street on the same date from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Stop by the Pao Arts Center’s Lunar New Year Celebration

This year, the Pao Arts Center is celebrating the New Year with family-friendly art and interactive workshops for all ages. The activities are free, but for those who are able there is a suggested donation of $10. Visit the Pao Arts Center’s website to learn more and register in advance!

Visit family-friendly attractions on The Greenway

While exploring these free community events, don’t forget to take advantage of The Greenway’s public parks abutting Chinatown! Auntie Kay and Uncle Frank Chin Park offers an interactive children’s playscape you can enjoy with friends and family. You can also pause between events at The Greenway’s Mary Soo Hoo Park near the Chinatown Gate at the intersection of John F. Fitzgerald Surface Road and Beach Street. We hope to see you there!

We hope you will be able to join us as we celebrate the Year of the Snake with our downtown neighbors, and we wish everyone a happy, healthy, and prosperous Lunar New Year!
