Summer on Dewey Presented by Citizens Bank
Earlier this July, the Greenway Conservancy announced Summer on Dewey Presented by Citizens Bank, a new partnership that will bring greater awareness to Dewey Square’s vibrancy, including our cider garden, food trucks, farmers market, public art, and beautiful gardens. Dewey Square is a place for the community to gather, play, and unwind. Tens […]
Greenway Around the Globe
The Greenway Conservancy hosts over 300 free events a year, commissions amazing rotating exhibits of contemporary public art, and offers four-season organic horticulture throughout the 17-acre park. With all that hustle and bustle, it becomes easy to miss how far The Greenway has come since opening in 2008/2009. There was a time before all the […]
Eat & Drink Local: Greenway Herbs Showing Up On Local Menus!
A few years ago we told you about plans to develop a multi-faceted Demonstration Garden in our Dewey Square Park. At the time, our Senior Horticulturist and Designer, Darrah Cole, spoke to the Conservancy’s intent to create a raised edible garden and outdoor classroom for instruction: We want the garden to serve as a great example […]
Our First Late Night Event – with Food Trucks of course…
In partnership with MassDOT and the MBTA’s late night service, we hosted our first ever late night food truck festival on Saturday, October 4th beginning at 11:30 pm and running until 1:30 am on Sunday morning, October 5th. It took place at Dewey Square Park just steps from South Station and the Red and Silver […]
Celebrating “Seven Moons Junction” by Shinique Smith
After two weeks, some 140 hours of work by the mural painters, and 40 gallons of paint emerging as incredibly detailed, vibrant patterns of color and shape… Dewey Square is alive with new public art! We celebrated the completion of the mural last night with a reception in Dewey Square! Live music from the Ethiopian pop, soul […]
New Public Art on the Greenway
“Collaboration” was the operative word for presenting Ritchie’s large-scale public art on the Greenway in Dewey Square.
Green & Grow Summer Interns are Back!
The Conservancy is so excited to have our summer interns again! Joining us this year (from the left of Darrah, a Greenway Horticulturist) are: Waverly, Andrew, Humberto, and Sam. All have graduated from the Green & Grow Apprenticeship Program and Sam and Waverly both completed the summer internship in 2012. “Things have really grown, I […]
Spring Cleaning
As keepers of the Greenway we lug lots of material through the city streets of Boston. We get a kick out of all the strange looks we receive from commuters while we work. Above, Ianna is directing Derek who was so kind to pull our rickshaw down Atlantic Ave. to our composting dumpster, about […]
Growing Greener: Fall Harvest
The first year in any garden can be tricky. The Green & Grow Apprentices had many challenges (trampled cucumbers, high pH, and pesky aphids), but overall our raised beds produced a considerable amount of produce!
What’s In Bloom
August is always one of our showiest months of flowers on the Greenway. From dinner plate-sized Hibiscus to aromatic Mountain Mint, we’ve got a flower for every style and predilection.
Dewey Square Park Update
The immediate remediation work at Dewey Square Park will conclude today, and the remainder of the restoration work will wait for warmer spring temperatures. We look forward to reopening the park soon, following the Boston Police Department’s decision to remove the barriers. Visitors are encouraged to use the paths through the park as the lawn will be roped off to allow the new sod to take root.
Dewey Square : The Park Returns
The Conservancy will return Dewey Square Park to the public again this week after restorations with a new temporary lawn and continued programming – we look forward to welcoming back the hundreds of daily visitors to eat lunch, buy produce, and enjoy the park!
A Cocktail on the Greenway
It’s not easy being a garden in the middle of downtown Boston. A garden bed in Dewey Square Park is suffering from deficient soils and poor drainage, and will soon be getting some additional attention from our Green & Grow teens. We’re using the soil and irrigation remediation of this bed as an educational opportunity.
What’s in Bloom
April showers bring May flowers. Hit the Greenway this month to see unique blooms from the Dwarf Fothergilla to the Horned Tulip.
Part science, part art: enhancing the Greenway’s horticultural collection
Ask any gardener and they will tell you, horticultural collections take time to get established. As living, breathing creations they require maintenance, study, and experimentation. Part science, part art, caring for the Greenway’s newly created horticultural collection is the challenge Tom Smarr (Greenway Superintendent of Horticulture) has gladly taken on with the help of his […]
Dewey Square Parks/Fort Point Channel Parks Update
What’s in a name? Lately some misinformation has surfaced about the Conservancy’s plans for Dewey Square Parks, the section of the Greenway between Summer Street and Seaport Boulevard. In response we are thinking about ways to send and receive ideas more clearly and beginning with posting a few facts in this blog. We’ve discussed the […]
Planning for 2010 – gardens in a parkland
PLANNING FOR 2010 –gardens in a parkland In our previous post we talked about the challenges and opportunities the Conservancy’s Park Operations staff will address in 2010. In this entry, we look more closely at the Dewey Square Parks, just north of South Station (formerly called Parcels 19-22). The Dewey Square Parks comprise two segments, […]
