Greenway Around the Globe

The Greenway Conservancy hosts over 300 free events a year, commissions amazing rotating exhibits of contemporary public art, and offers four-season organic horticulture throughout the 17-acre park. With all that hustle and bustle, it becomes easy to miss how far The Greenway has come since opening in 2008/2009. There was a time before all the […]

Gardens in Winter; New Blooms Already

With the ground bare from melting snow you can see the earliest of flowers emerging on the Greenway. Mostly found in the Fort Point Channel Parks, these are true winter bloomers. The very first to appear are on the Witch Hazel, a small native tree. The flowers of the Hamamelis vernalis are just now emerging, […]

Oh! That Exfoliating Bark!

Oh that exfoliating bark! Winter interest continued. Whether it is dry, cold, bright and sunny or gray, muted, frosty and snowy, the bark on the trees can’t help itself. It stands out in the sparseness of winter, and the best bark of all is the exfoliating bark.  It’s rolled, peeling, curled edges; it’s patterned blotches […]

What’s In Bloom

I find great delight in the surprise of a brilliant flash of red, the crisp lines of twigs swollen with next year’s leaf buds, and the soft, antler-like show of Magnolia flower buds.

Growing Greener with Green & Grow

During February vacation week, the Green & Grow Apprentices embarked on an unforgettable three day excursion to the White Mountains of New Hampshire where they climbed mountains, met with National Forest Service Professionals, explored their sense of self, and conquered their fears.

Growing Greener with Green & Grow

One of the goals of the Green & Grow Apprenticeship program is to foster the development of a healthy and meaningful connection to our natural world. In essence, we bring this connection to work with us every day. The Apprentices are taking part in a number of activities to prepare them for their primary nature excursion—set to take place in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

What’s in Bloom

We have enjoyed an unseasonably warm fall as we continue our work out in the parks, but the winter chill has begun to descend upon us. As the very last autumn leaves fall the evergreen trees and shrubs are becoming the focal point.

What’s in Bloom

As the last full month of fall draws to a close, our deciduous trees are almost completely bare and we are working to prepare the garden beds for winter by cutting back perennials and cleaning up the fallen leaves. Take advantage of these beautiful days by getting outside to admire the changing landscape.

Preparing for Winter

There is a large amount of behind the scenes planning and work that goes into putting the Greenway’s lawns and garden beds to rest for the winter and the Green & Grow Apprentices are learning all about it.

After the Snow Storm

While most of us enjoyed a snow day at home during Wednesday’s storm, there were many hard at work trying to keep the streets and sidewalks of Boston safe. The Greenway maintenance staff braved the elements to make sure our park paths were accessible, safe and navigable.

A Big Bright Lights Thank You!

The unveiling of Bright Lights for Winter Nights was a success! The parks came alive with music, light and joy to celebrate the winter solstice. A huge THANK YOU to our sponsors, volunteers and staff for making this evening of winter wonder possible.

Beginning Thursday the 14th at 4 pm, colorful lights adorning the plaza poles will be illuminated as part of Bright Lights for Winter Nights, a display of lights connecting the Greenway. […]

Preparing the Greenway for old man winter

Many of us are busy during this time of year sprucing up our abodes for holiday visitors. The Conservancy’s horticulture and maintenance team is equally active getting ready for old man winter’s visit. You’ve likely read about the preventative measure we took to prevent fountain damage but you might be surprised to learn about other […]

Bright Lights for Winter Nights will feature creative lighting elements that highlight the Greenway’s four distinctive park designs while unifying over a mile of […]

Protecting the Rings Fountain

Tomorrow, the Conservancy will be placing recycled sea wall stones around the Rings Fountain in the Wharf District Parks as a barrier to prevent the type of fountain damage experienced last winter, which occurred before the Conservancy began maintaining the Greenway. These large historic hand-cut stones are uniform in size and will be placed in […]
