The Conservancy is so excited to have our summer interns again! Joining us this year (from the left of Darrah, a Greenway Horticulturist) are: Waverly, Andrew, Humberto, and Sam. All have graduated from the Green & Grow Apprenticeship Program and Sam and Waverly both completed the summer internship in 2012. “Things have really grown, I […]
Making Connections
The Green & Grow Apprentices visited Ferry Beach Ecology School to discover more about healthy water systems, ecology, and the role humans play in protecting our natural resources. We made many connections to the Greenway and to our winter curriculum during our trip, here are just a few: All ecosystems are made up of living and […]
Rings Fountain Work Completed
On Monday, April 29th, our maintenance team of Bob, Nick, Tom and Ray, with help from a few others, completed the project to clean and repair our pride and joy, the Rings Fountain, for the summer season.

Rings Fountain Repair & Cleaning Project Update
Our maintenance team just began the fifth week of our two month project to repair and clean the most popular water feature on the greenway. We’re making great progress and the Rings Fountain will be up and running just in time for summer! Last week, we removed the remaining solenoid valves and hoses from the […]
Winter Lights On the Greenway
The Greenway’s Winter Lights program runs throughout the winter months from December through March. Our budget for Winter Lights displays and artist-driven events (running from December through March) is spread across the 1.5 miles of Greenway. We have planned three artist events for 2012/2013 in addition to a selection of Greenway features that are lit, including: – Light […]
Growing Greener: Sharing the Knowledge
The Green & Grow Apprentices have learned so much this fall and they showcased their knowledge at the monthly Boston Youth Environmental Network (BYEN) networking dinner in December.
What’s In Bloom
I find great delight in the surprise of a brilliant flash of red, the crisp lines of twigs swollen with next year’s leaf buds, and the soft, antler-like show of Magnolia flower buds.
Our Greenway Membership Program
We’ve just launched a new membership program. We spoke with Ace, our Development Associate, to find out how it came to be…
Growing Greener: Fall Harvest
The first year in any garden can be tricky. The Green & Grow Apprentices had many challenges (trampled cucumbers, high pH, and pesky aphids), but overall our raised beds produced a considerable amount of produce!
Transplanting
There’s been a flurry of fall projects continuing on portions of the greenway these past few weeks focusing on drainage improvements, transplanting shrubs and trees, and turf replacement. Our Horticulture staff is been in the thick of it, working with a variety of contractors to get all of the work done. We spoke with […]
National Public Lands Volunteer Day
Our first National Public Lands volunteer day on Saturday, September 29th on the Greenway had a rainy start, but by the time volunteers began to arrive at six different locations to dig into their tasks for the morning, the rain had departed and we had a cool, overcast day to tackle the mountain of work laid out by our horticulture and maintenance staff.
Sneak Peek Carousel Week: Hello Fox
Today we had the privilege of sitting down with Fox, one of the characters created for the new custom carousel on the Rose Kennedy Greenway.
What’s In Bloom
August is always one of our showiest months of flowers on the Greenway. From dinner plate-sized Hibiscus to aromatic Mountain Mint, we’ve got a flower for every style and predilection.
What’s In Bloom
As an unusually warm winter persists, we are beginning to see some of the shorter-term effects that the balmy weather is taking on our plants along the Greenway. We have noticed very early flowering times, bulb emergence, and bud swelling.
What’s In Bloom
Enjoy the silhouettes of our bare deciduous trees and shrubs, the waxy leaves and slender needles of our Evergreens, colors of foliage and bark left in the landscape, buds of spring growth waiting to emerge, and seed-bearing structures of all kinds.
Dewey Square Park Update
The immediate remediation work at Dewey Square Park will conclude today, and the remainder of the restoration work will wait for warmer spring temperatures. We look forward to reopening the park soon, following the Boston Police Department’s decision to remove the barriers. Visitors are encouraged to use the paths through the park as the lawn will be roped off to allow the new sod to take root.
What’s in Bloom
As the last full month of fall draws to a close, our deciduous trees are almost completely bare and we are working to prepare the garden beds for winter by cutting back perennials and cleaning up the fallen leaves. Take advantage of these beautiful days by getting outside to admire the changing landscape.
What’s in Bloom
The Greenway is still ablaze with vibrant fall colors, so don’t delay in coming to take an autumn stroll through the parks.
Preparing for Winter
There is a large amount of behind the scenes planning and work that goes into putting the Greenway’s lawns and garden beds to rest for the winter and the Green & Grow Apprentices are learning all about it.
What’s in Bloom
As winter approaches many people dreading the dreary upcoming months may dismiss the idea of a beautiful winter landscape. We still have a few weeks left of fall color, but as our trees and shrubs lose their leaves and the perennials are cut down or covered with a blanket of snow, beautiful aspects of plants that may have previously been hidden will be revealed.
What’s in Bloom
Learn more about fall blooms on the Greenway. This week our blog features the lovely, Lady in Black Aster, Cockspur Hawthorn & Purple-stemmed Aster.
What’s in Bloom
As the mercury drops the Greenway continues to bloom. Bundle up and take a stroll to check out these fall flowers.
What’s in Bloom
Autumn lends itself to beautiful blooms attracting curious insects to the Greenway.
